Renovation for a daycare center for children with autistic spectrum.

The com­pe­ti­tion pre­sent­ed a unique op­por­tu­ni­ty to ad­dress the ex­ist­ing build­ing not only through its tech­ni­cal and pro­gram­mat­ic up­grades, but also in its broad­er con­text. Situated with­in a con­stel­la­tion of pavil­ions ded­i­cat­ed to ed­u­ca­tion­al and men­tal care cen­ters, the day cen­ter forms a vi­tal part of a lush green cam­pus.
Our win­ning pro­pos­al sought to en­hance the link­ages be­tween the ex­ist­ing pavil­ions and their nat­ur­al sur­round­ings through pre­cise in­ter­ven­tions that re­in­forced their con­nec­tions. By strate­gi­cal­ly cut­ting the ex­ist­ing build­ing and in­tro­duc­ing cov­ered ar­eas, the build­ing is trans­formed into three pavil­ions, each of which fits har­mo­nious­ly with­in their built en­vi­ron­ment. These in-be­tween cov­ered spaces serve to con­nect the pavil­ions, while si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly open­ing up the day cen­ter to the sur­round­ing cam­pus.
With large fold­able win­dows and per­fo­rat­ed roofs, the pavil­ions are filled with nat­ur­al light, cre­at­ing gen­er­ous ac­cess to the out­doors. Deliberately un-pro­grammed, these spaces re­flect our be­lief in the ben­e­fits of open air on the dai­ly lives of the chil­dren, who can now thrive in an en­vi­ron­ment that sup­ports their unique needs. Overall, this in­no­v­a­tive de­sign seam­less­ly in­te­grates with the cam­pus, fos­ter­ing a sense of com­mu­ni­ty and pro­mot­ing the de­vel­op­ment of its users.
